<blockquote><p>â€œJust an hour ago on stage at TED Global, Jawbone announced the grand project theyâ€™ve been quietly working on for years: A wearable band called Up, which is infused with sensors and connected to computer-based software, allowing you to track your eating, sleeping, and activity patterns. <p>The Up is intended to monitor your movement 24 hours a day. The connected, smartphone-based software will then be able to tell how much youâ€™ve been sleeping and how much youâ€™ve moved. Up will then combine that data with information about your meals, which you enter simply by taking pictures of using your smartphone camera. Then, the smartphone program will supply you with â€œnudgesâ€� that are meant to help you live healthier, day by day. For example, if you havenâ€™t slept much, when you wake up the app might suggest a high-protein breakfast and an extra glass of water.â€�</p></blockquote>

<td style="width:70%" valign="top">Imagine when a journey from A to B is no longer routine, as your car in the near-future encourages a sense of play, exploration and learning. 
<p>This is the image engineers and designers from Toyota Motor Europe (TME) and the <a href="http://ciid.dk/">Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design</a> (CIID) had for Toyotaâ€™s â€œWindow to the Worldâ€� vehicle concept, which was recently exhibited at the ACEA exhibition: â€œ<a href="http://www.futuremobilitynow.com/">Our Future Mobility Now</a>â€�.</p>
<p>The concept re-defines the relationship between passengers in a vehicle and the world around it, by transforming the vehicleâ€™s windows into an interactive interface. Using augmented reality, what used to be a pane of glass, begins to provide passengers with information about landmarks and other objects as they go past. The window can also be used as a canvas for drawings, which then interacts with the passing environment.</p>
<p>Engineers and designers from TMEâ€™s Kansei Design Division teamed up with CIID to develop this concept in the context of near-future mobility. Instead of creating a concept simply with strong visual aesthetics, they aimed to create beautiful and intangible experiences to address specific needs and desires, to bring genuine value to the vehicleâ€™s passengers.</p>
<p>Through the latest advances in augmented technology, TME Kansei Division and CIID developed five concepts for Toyotaâ€™s â€œWindow to the Worldâ€�.</p>

<blockquote><p>â€œMy primary output is analysis of how new technology users are living at the intersection of macro processes. Examples of questions that I ask are: What does the future of the internet look like? What happens when the next 300 million migrants with digital tools are able to get online? How will the state, the world, and technological infrastructures accommodate such a massive change in scale? How do we design and market to this group?</p>
<p>I hang out with people and spend a lot of time trying to see the world through their eyes. I make long and deep observations of how everyday life is achieved and negotiated. I then interpret my observations and contextualize my analysis in relation to past, current and future socioeconomic, technological and cultural developments.</p>
<p>By answering these questions I am able to provide context and explanations for why people engage or donâ€™t engage with certain technologies, to explain how this all interfaces with historical and present day life, and how designers, engineers, and organizers can meet the daily needs of both low-income/marginalized users and the burgeoning middle class.â€�</p></blockquote>

Access to mobiles may indeed allow for better medical information, change the way farmers grow and sell crops, expand the way families interact, influence the way governments treat their citizens, and improve the way students learn in schools. 
<p>But, asks MobileActive in its ongoing series on <a href="http://mobileactive.org/mobile-myths-and-reality-new-series-deconstructing-mobiles-development">Mobile Myths and Realities: Deconstructing Mobile</a>, what is the real story behind these benefits? And who really gains from them?</p>
<p>In her contribution to the series, Anne-Ryan Heatwole looks at “how women are or are not benefitting from the ubiquity of mobile telephony”. </p>
<blockquote><p>“Mobile technology has the ability to change the way we communicate, but its effects are not evenly distributed. In societies that are divided by social and gender roles, women, especially rural women, are often left out. Gender disparity in society is often echoed in mobile usage; while technology allows some women greater social and economic freedom, in other cases, it simply upholds previously held social constructs. In the areas of social interactions, education, and economics, mobile phones have a distinctly gendered impact on its users. An examination of research and case studies that focus on women and mobile technology reveals that although access to mobile telephones has many benefits for female users, it not a solution to female poverty or gender inequality.”</p></blockquote>

<p>It acts as an ‘emotion mirror’ in which the intensity of the user’s feelings is reflected. </p>
<p>Research shows that home investors do not act purely rationally: their behavior is influenced by emotions, most notably fear and greed, which can compromise their ability to take an objective, factual stance. </p>
<p>This insight led to the Rationalizer concept in which online traders are alerted when it may be wise to take a time-out, wind down and re-consider their actions.</p>
